Net metering stop: no extra case without panels

Without solar panels you do not buy a home battery because net metering ends. The case stays charging on cheap hours. What changes, and what does not.

At the kitchen table someone says net metering is ending, so maybe a battery, even without panels. Net metering is offsetting your own generation. With no panels, you do not export that generation. The stop on 1 January 2027 therefore does not change your battery maths. What does: a dynamic contract, evening use, and whether the price gap is wide enough. What net metering is, and what it is not

Smart home battery

Net metering is a line on your annual bill. Until the stop, power your panels export can still be offset against power you draw later, including tax. That is not a battery in the meter cupboard, and not evening power you stored from your roof. It is bookkeeping between draw and export over the year. Without that line on your bill, nothing changes in how a battery calculates for you.

From 1 January 2027 that offsetting ends. You pay for draw in full, and for export you receive a feed-in payment. For homes with panels, the gain shifts to using the power yourself. What that bill looks like is in our article on net metering ending.

Without panels that line was never on your bill. There was nothing to offset. The stop does not take a benefit away from you, and it does not hand you one.

Two battery jobs, two different sums

A battery can do two things, and in the news those jobs often blur. The first is using your own solar power later in the house. The second is charging cheap from the grid and using or exporting when it is dear. Only the first notices the end of net metering. The second already ran on hourly prices, and still does.

The stop does not change the no-panel case. That stays a price game with a dynamic contract.

Why 2027 does not make a no-panel battery smarter

A battery without panels buys grid power when it is cheap, and uses or exports it later. That only works with hourly prices. On a fixed rate every kilowatt-hour costs the same, whenever you charge, so there is nothing to shift. The net metering stop does not change that fixed rate, and it does not suddenly make a dynamic contract cheaper.

The net metering stop is not in that sum. It does not change how dear the evening peak is, or how cheap a sunny afternoon is. It changes how homes with panels see their annual bill. You never had that offset.

Buy a battery because 2027 is in every headline, and you buy it for the wrong reason. Buy it because evening use is high and your contract moves by the hour, and that is the same reason as last year.

What you still need, if the sums work

Three things stay, with or without net metering: a dynamic contract, a smart meter, and steering that does not fill the cheapest hour at full tilt while your charger or heat pump also draws. Backup power is an extra wish, not a side effect of price steering. A battery that charges on hourly prices does not automatically keep your fridge on during an outage. Say so on the quote if you want circuits to stay on.

A fixed battery is registered separately via energieleveren.nl. Since 7 May 2024 that can sit next to solar panels, for storage up to 1 megawatt. We include that registration in the handover.

Should I buy a battery now without panels?

Only if the sums already worked: high evening use, a dynamic contract, and steering your connection can handle. The net metering stop does not add an extra reason. It does not take one away either. If you have no panels, you were never in that offset, and you still will not be in 2027.

You stay on the grid. A home battery is not an island. It shifts when you buy or export power. It does not take the house off the cable.

Conclusion

Net metering ends on 1 January 2027. For homes with panels that is a different annual bill. For homes without panels it is not a reason to buy a battery, and not a reason to drop the idea. The case was already: price gap, usage, steering.
