With or without a home battery: net metering or storage?

Is a home battery worth it, or are you better off with net metering? The pros and cons of storing versus feeding back, and which choice suits whom.

While net metering still applies broadly and you use little in the evening, you can do fine without a battery. Use a lot in the evening, have a heat pump or charger, or net metering shrinking? Then a battery quickly becomes more attractive. We are glad to run your numbers.

Without a battery you feed your surplus back and settle it through net metering. With a battery you store your power for later. Which is smarter depends on your use and how net metering develops.

With a battery

Pros

  • +Use your own stored power in the evening
  • +Less reliant on the feed-in payment
  • +Stronger as net metering is phased down
  • +Possible backup power during outages

Cons

  • -Higher upfront investment
  • -Does not pay off in every situation yet
  • -Needs space and a suitable inverter

Without a battery (net metering)

Pros

  • +No extra investment
  • +Simple: feed back and settle
  • +Fine while net metering applies broadly

Cons

  • -You gain less as net metering shrinks
  • -You use less of your own power
  • -Reliant on the feed-in payment

Verdict

While net metering still applies broadly and you use little in the evening, you can do fine without a battery. Use a lot in the evening, have a heat pump or charger, or net metering shrinking? Then a battery quickly becomes more attractive. We are glad to run your numbers.

Frequently asked questions

Increasingly so, especially with high evening use or a falling feed-in payment. With broad net metering and little evening use, net metering is often still enough.
Feeding back gives less, so storing and using your own power becomes more attractive. A battery fills that gap.
Often yes. With a battery-ready or hybrid inverter, expanding is easier. We take that into account during installation.

Is battery storage worth it already?

Increasingly so, especially with high evening use or a falling feed-in payment. With broad net metering and little evening use, net metering is often still enough.

Can I add a battery later?

Often yes. With a battery-ready or hybrid inverter, expanding is easier. We take that into account during installation.
