Home EV charging: how does it work?

How home charging with a wallbox works, what charging power means, and how to charge on your own solar power.

A home charger fills your electric car faster and more safely than a normal socket. With solar panels or a dynamic contract you charge on your cheapest power too.

How does home charging work?

A wallbox is a fixed charging point on your wall or a small post. It delivers more power than a socket and has protection against overload. You plug in the car, and charging starts automatically or via an app or card.

What does charging power mean?

Charging power is in kilowatts and sets how fast you charge. A single-phase connection charges more gently than a three-phase one. How much your home can handle depends on your meter cupboard. We check in advance what fits without overloading your system.

Charging on your own solar power

If you have solar panels, you can charge your car with your own generated power. Smart charging makes the car charge mainly when your panels are producing. That way you drive on your own sun for much of the year.

Charger, battery and dynamic contract

A charger pairs nicely with a home battery and a dynamic energy contract. You then charge on your own power or during the cheapest hours of the day. Load balancing spreads the available power neatly across your home and the car.
