Why insulation before a heat pump?

Why good insulation makes the difference for a heat pump, which measures help most, and when a hybrid setup makes more sense.

A heat pump works best in a well-insulated home, because it can then heat at a low temperature. The less heat you lose, the more efficiently and cheaply the pump runs.

Why insulation lays the foundation

The unit supplies heat at a lower temperature than a boiler. That is efficient, but only works well if your home holds that heat. In a draughty, poorly insulated home the pump has to work harder and uses more power. Insulation lays the foundation.

Which measures give the most

Start with the biggest leaks: roof, facade, floor and glazing. Good glazing, cavity or roof insulation and sealing gaps often make the biggest difference. Which measure helps most depends on your home and what has already been done.

When you can't insulate all at once

Not everyone can tackle everything at the same time. A hybrid setup is then a fine intermediate step: you already save a lot on gas while you insulate at your own pace. Later you can often still move to all-electric.

Frequently asked questions

Technically yes, but the pump runs less efficiently and you pay more for power. A hybrid setup is often wiser until you insulate better.
Usually tackling the biggest heat losses: roof, facade, floor and glazing. What gives you the most depends on your home.
No, but a delivery system that works at a low temperature, such as underfloor heating or generous radiators, helps the unit run efficiently.

Can I switch without insulating first?

Is underfloor heating required?

No, but a delivery system that works at a low temperature, such as underfloor heating or generous radiators, helps the unit run efficiently.
